Chapter 19 guidelines
Injury, poisoning and certain other consequences of external causes
S00-T88
Covers injuries, poisonings, and certain other consequences of external causes. Nearly every code in this chapter requires a 7th character to identify the encounter type.
Key coding points
- •The 7th character 'A' (initial encounter) is used while the patient is receiving active treatment; 'D' (subsequent encounter) is used for encounters after the patient has completed active treatment and is receiving routine care during healing; 'S' (sequela) is used for complications or conditions that arise as a direct result of the injury after the acute phase.
- •Multiple injuries are each coded separately, with the most severe injury sequenced first when it's the reason for the encounter.
