Chapter 2 guidelines
Neoplasms
C00-D49
Covers neoplasms, both benign and malignant. Sequencing here depends heavily on the reason for the encounter: treatment directed at the malignancy itself is coded differently than treatment for a complication of the malignancy or of its treatment.
Key coding points
- •When treatment is directed at the malignancy, the malignancy is sequenced as the principal/first-listed diagnosis.
- •When the encounter is solely for management of an anemia or other complication associated with the neoplasm or its treatment, code the complication first, then the neoplasm.
- •A personal history code (Z85.-) is used once treatment of a primary malignancy has been completed and there is no current treatment directed at that site.
