Chapter 4 guidelines
Endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases
E00-E89
Covers endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases — most prominently diabetes mellitus, which is one of the most heavily used and most detailed code families in ICD-10-CM.
Key coding points
- •Diabetes codes are organized by type (Type 1, Type 2, drug/chemical-induced, due to underlying condition, gestational) with each manifestation (nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy, etc.) built into the same category as a combination code.
- •When a patient has multiple diabetes-related complications, assign as many codes from the relevant category as needed to describe all associated conditions.
- •Long-term (current) insulin use is reported with an additional code (Z79.4) when applicable, except for Type 1 diabetes, where insulin use is inherent to the condition.
